NORTHERN LAND COUNCIL Coastal or "Saltwater" Aboriginal people in the Top End of the Northern Territory have a strong attachment to "sea country". Connection to land does not stop at the water's edge. For saltwater people, the land and sea are one. There are sacred sites and dreaming tracks in and under the sea, just as there are on the land.
On 30 July 2008 the High Court of Australia confirmed that traditional owners of the Blue Mud Bay region in north east Arnhem Land – together with Traditional Owners of almost the entire Northern Territory coastline - have exclusive access rights to tidal waters overlying Aboriginal land.
The Northern Land Council is now consulting with all relevant stakeholders including Traditional Owners to obtain a negotiated settlement which will benefit all Territorians.
The NLC is seeking your views and will be encouraging all fishers to fill out our survey form on this issue at the Top End Fishing Festival.
